In 1983, Euzhan Palcy, film-maker from Martinique, realizes her first full-length film "Rue Cases Nègres", and places French Antilles on the worldmap of the cinematographic art. This French movie, one of the most prize-winning this year, (17 international awards among which the Silver Lion and the Prize of feminine interpretation at the Venice Mostra and the César of the first work)
She is the first black director produced by a Hollywood studio.

In 1989, she gets Marlon Brando to play in "A Season white and dry" produced by the Metro Goldwyn Mayer.

In 1992, she directs "Siméon", who stages for the first time the famous group Kassav.

From 1994 till 1996, she dedicates four movies to the poet and the politician Aimé Césaire, "A Word for XXIth century" (trilogy) and "The fundamental Friend": Césaire / Senghor. After "Ruby Bridges" (1998) presented from the White House, on ABC by president Clinton and The Killing Yard (2001), she returns to France for the shooting of "Roads of Dissidents" (2005). Euzhan Palcy is a "Chevalier of the Legion of Honour and Officer in the National Order of the Merit, Honorary citizen of New York, Atlanta, New Orléans. A college in Martinique and a cinema in France are named after her. In May, 2011, the Cannes film festival and the Museum of Modern Art ( MoMA) in New York paid her tribute.
