Daughter of the writer Geneviève Serreau and the director Jean-Marie Serreau, Coline Serreau possesses a varied artistic luggage. She studied Litterature, attended the National Conservatory for Music in esthetics and music history and the organ class of Jean Langlais at the Schola Cantorum as well as the Circus School of Annie Fratellini.

Attracted by theater, she enters as a trainee comedian the Centre National of Rue Blanche in 1968, then the Comédie-Française in 1969 and works with Romain Bouteille and Coluche before writing for cinema and theater, directing of theater plays, films and opera.

In 1975, she directs her first movie " But what do they want? " and faces a real success in 1977 with her second movie " Why not ? ". In 1981 she directs " What do we wait for to be happy ". In 1985, " Three Men and a baby makes more than 12 million entries, two Césars. a record for the number of entries for a French movie. Disney produced the remake " Three men and a baby ". She wrote the script, and it knew the same success as in France.
She directed then " Romuald and Juliette ", " The Crisis "(César of the best script), " The Beautiful Green ", "Chaos" (César for Most Promising Actress), " 18 years later ", " Saint Jacques... Mecca ", " local Solutions for global disorder"

She played in numerous shows which she wrote or not, among them "As you like" of Shakespeare, " The Caucasian circle of chalk " of Bertolt Brecht ( 3 Molière awards). She is the author of " Rabbit Rabbit " (one Molière award), "Quisaitout and Grobêta" ( five Molière awards), " The summer Lounge ".
She was for two years President of ARP, the association of producing directors. In 2006, she plays Arnolphe in " The school of the women " of Molière at Theater de la Madeleine.

She staged at the Bastille Opera:the Johan Strauss's "Bat" , " The Barber of Seville " of Rossini with Joyce di Donato in the role of Rosine, created in 2000 and 2002 , they were recreated anumerous amount of times. The "Barber of Seville" is again planned for 2015) and "Manon" of Jules Massenet with Nathalie Dessay.

She has been president of the Academy Fratellini, the graduate school of circus arts, and the center of art where she staged in 2009 " Hip soared hup " and in 2010 "Cirkipop".
She has published her theater at Actes-Sud, as well as a book on the Fratellini Academy, the script of "The Beautiful Green" and the book " Local Solutions for a Global Desorder ", republished in paperback.

At Flammarion she published the novel "Saint Jacques la Mecque" who was translated into German and republished in paperback.
She composed the music of some of her movies.
She manages since 2003 the Choir of the Delta which gives numerous concerts in Paris and in all France.
She organizes every year since 2007 concert tours in villages and churches of the Drôme (51 concerts in 2013).
In 2012 she directed a documentary movie for the cinema " France and the steering wheel " whose release is planned for February 2014.
She prepares a fiction adapted from the novel "Consuelo" by Georges" Sand. She received the Grand Prix of the SACD in 2004.
She is named Officer ( 1994 ) then a Commander (1999 ) of the Order of the Arts and Letters. She is named Knight ( 1990 ) then president of the National order of Merit.
She was raised to the rank of Chevalier of the Legion of Honor on July 14th, 2004 by Jacques Chirac.
